Chronic Cough Treatment

Chronic Cough is a cough that lasts longer than 8 weeks and is typically a result of irritation of the upper airway and larynx (voice box). Your examination and interview may reveal factors causing upper airway and laryngeal irritability, including acid reflux, allergies, dehydration, and certain medications such as ACE inhibitors. Over time, recurring coughing fits and frequent throat clearing may worsen the irritation, making cough spasms more likely to occur.

In addition to medical management of underlying causes of upper airway and laryngeal irritation, treatment for chronic cough involves identifying your triggers and implementing behavioral cough suppression techniques. You will learn substitutes for coughing that may include sipping water, a hard swallow, or breathing techniques. Over time, you will gain a sense of control over your problem as you understand your coughing patterns, anticipate your triggers, and have strategies in place to address coughing when it occurs.
