New Transgender Voice and Communication Group to be Held at The Blaine Block Institute for Voice Analysis & Rehabilitation in Dayton, Ohio
Giving Voice to the Tri State’s Transgender Community:
The Blaine Block Institute for Voice Analysis Helps Transgendered Individuals Meet Their Voice & Communication Goals
Perception of ones gender is most commonly judged based on visual cues such as hairstyle, clothing, and makeup. However, there is a single key element that often defines ones gender, and that is a persons VOICE. Voice is often not readily modifiable by an individual alone, as physical changes that occur in the larynx during puberty cannot be easily reversed without professional voice therapy and individual practice. Due to the sensitive and often costly nature of the transgender transitioning process, many clients wishing to feminize their voice may turn to the internet or friends to self-modify their voice with sub-optimal results. Listeners perceive voices to be male or female based not only on the pitch of their voice, but also on prosody (the inflection), and physical cues or gestures that accompany the speaker.
The Blaine Block Institute for Voice Analysis and Rehabilitation (BBIVAR), has a long-established reputation for discretely working with clients who desire voice feminization. Each individual who seeks voice evaluation and treatment at BBIVAR is regarded with respect, dignity, and professionalism, in either private or newly established group transgender voice therapy sessions. BBIVAR is the oldest private practice voice center in the country and has been dedicated to evaluation and treatment of all types of voice disorders since its establishment in 1984. Transgender voice therapy is simply one of the services offered by our elite professional voice team proving to be the only voice center in the tri-state region with doctoral level clinical voice pathologists and masters level transgendered voice experts. We aim to provide optimal voice results based on individual needs and goals in a timely, cost-efficient manner provided with compassion.
In addition to voice feminization services, the clinic also offers evaluation and treatment of professional voice for performers, as well as all other individuals experiencing voice and/or throat related symptoms. More information for BBIVARs voice services may be found at www.BBIVAR.com, https://www.facebook.com/BBIVAR, or by calling (937)496-2622.
Each individuals journey will likely be different and not all transgendered individuals transition at the same rate or in the same manner. The majority of these individuals do, however, often take prescribed hormones in order to facilitate the occurrence of physical changes. Unfortunately, such hormones will not result in a change of voice (i.e. vocal feminization) for the transwoman. However, for an individual wishing to feminize her voice, aid is available in the form of behavioral voice feminization therapy.
Voice feminization therapy at BBIVAR is available within one-on-one sessions and/or group sessions. All therapy is individualized for the particular goals of each client. The BBIVAR approach to voice feminization encompasses a multi-sensory, total communication method. Clients will work on many aspects of communication; from voice feminization to feminization of body language, to overall development and maintenance of a feminine image.
Three of the centers voice therapists are trained in specialized approaches to voice feminization for those individuals transitioning from male to female. Erin N. Donahue, B.M., M.A., CCC-SLP is a voice pathologist and singing voice specialist who has a specialized interest in voice feminization. She has been working with the transgender population in Cincinnati and Dayton since 2012. Wendy D. LeBorgne, Ph.D., CCC-SLP is a voice pathologist and singing voice specialist, and is clinical director of ProVoice Center and the Blaine Block Institute for Voice Analysis and Rehabilitation in Dayton, and has presented to groups on the topic of voice therapy services for transgendered clients.
