Vocal Cord Dysfunction

Vocal Cord Dysfunction (VCD) also known as Paradoxical Vocal Fold Movement (PVFM) is an episode (attack) of an inability to get air past the vocal folds and into the lungs. This often results in a scary event for the individual and those around them. It is often misdiagnosed as asthma, although both conditions can occur simultaneously.

If you are referred for a VCD assessment, an in-depth case history regarding your breathing problems and lifestyle will be taken. A clinical evaluation, using rigid videostroboscopy will then be used to examine the vocal folds and airway both pre- and post- exposure to a known trigger.

If VCD is suspected, you will be enrolled in approximately 2-4 sessions of therapy including education on normal breathing patterns, laryngeal control exercises, and identification of restrictive breathing patterns. There is a high success rate for the elimination of VCD once mastery of therapeutic exercise is demonstrated by the patient.
